Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly
Irrational behavior is a part of human nature, but as MIT professor Ariely has discovered in 20 years of researching behavioral economics, people tend to behave irrationally in a predictable fashion. Drawing on psychology and economics, behavioral economics can show us why cautious people make poor decisions about sex when aroused, why patients get greater relief from a more expensive drug over its cheaper counterpart and why honest people may steal office supplies or communal food, but not money. According to Ariely, our understanding of economics, now based on the assumption of a rational subject, should, in fact, be based on our systematic, unsurprising irrationality. Ariely argues that greater understanding of previously ignored or misunderstood forces (emotions, relativity and social norms) that influence our economic behavior brings a variety of opportunities for reexamining individual motivation and consumer choice, as well as economic and educational policy. Ariely's intelligent, exuberant style and thought-provoking arguments make for a fascinating, eye-opening read. (Feb.)

Review

From The New York Times Book Review
"Obviously, this sly and lucid book is not about your grandfather’s dismal science…. Predictably Irrational is a far more revolutionary book than its unthreatening manner lets on. It’s a concise summary of why today’s social science increasingly treats the markets-know-best model as a fairy tale….he and his fellow social scientists want to replace the "rational economic man" model with one that more accurately describes the real laws that drive human choices."

From USA Today
"Surprisingly entertaining. . . . Easy to read. . . . Ariely’s book makes economics and the strange happenings of the human mind fun."

More Praise for Predictably Irrational
"A marvelous book that is both thought-provoking and highly entertaining, ranging from the power of placebos to the pleasures of Pepsi. Ariely unmasks the subtle but powerful tricks that our minds play on us, and shows us how we can prevent being fooled."
Jerome Groopman, Recanati Chair of Medicine, Harvard Medical School, and New York Times bestselling author of How Doctors Think

"Dan Ariely is a genius at understanding human behavior: no economist does a better job of uncovering and explaining the hidden reasons for the weird ways we act, in the marketplace and out. Predictably Irrational will reshape the way you see the world, and yourself, for good."
James Surowiecki, author of The Wisdom of Crowds

"Filled with clever experiments, engaging ideas, and delightful anecdotes. Dan Ariely is a wise and amusing guide to the foibles, errors, and bloopers of everyday decision making."
Daniel Gilbert, Professor of Psychology, Harvard University, and New York Times bestselling author of Stumbling on Happiness

"This is going to be the most influential, talked-about book in years. It is so full of dazzling insights--and so engaging--that once I started reading, I couldn’t put it down."
Daniel McFadden, 2000 Nobel Laureate in Economics, Morris Cox Professor of Economics, University of California at Berkeley

"Predictably Irrational is wildly original. It shows why--much more often than we usually care to admit--humans make foolish, and sometimes disastrous, mistakes. Ariely not only gives us a great read; he also makes us much wiser."
George Akerlof, 2001 Nobel Laureate in Economics, Koshland Professor of Economics, University of California at Berkeley

"The most difficult part of investing is managing your emotions. Dan explains why that is so challenging for all of us, and how recognizing your built-in biases can help you avoid common mistakes."
Charles Schwab, Chairman and CEO, The Charles Schwab Corporation

Book Description
Why do our headaches persist after taking a one-cent aspirin but disappear when we take a 50-cent aspirin?

Why does recalling the Ten Commandments reduce our tendency to lie, even when we couldn't possibly be caught?

Why do we splurge on a lavish meal but cut coupons to save twenty-five cents on a can of soup?

Why do we go back for second helpings at the unlimited buffet, even when our stomachs are already full?

And how did we ever start spending $4.15 on a cup of coffee when, just a few years ago, we used to pay less than a dollar?

When it comes to making decisions in our lives, we think we're in control. We think we're making smart, rational choices. But are we?

In a series of illuminating, often surprising experiments, MIT behavioral economist Dan Ariely refutes the common assumption that we behave in fundamentally rational ways. Blending everyday experience with groundbreaking research, Ariely explains how expectations, emotions, social norms, and other invisible, seemingly illogical forces skew our reasoning abilities.

Not only do we make astonishingly simple mistakes every day, but we make the same types of mistakes, Ariely discovers. We consistently overpay, underestimate, and procrastinate. We fail to understand the profound effects of our emotions on what we want, and we overvalue what we already own. Yet these misguided behaviors are neither random nor senseless. They're systematic and predictable—making us predictably irrational.

From drinking coffee to losing weight, from buying a car to choosing a romantic partner, Ariely explains how to break through these systematic patterns of thought to make better decisions. Predictably Irrational will change the way we interact with the world--one small decision at a time.

Falls way short.2
Not very entertaining. Not very educational. A lot of the material wasn't new to me. Once or twice I wasn't sure what his point was.

A must-read: No doubt about it!!!5
Predictably Irrational is one book that satisfies so many audiences that it is simply amazing, and it does an awesome job at that. Without delving into the research that Dan Ariely and his group of eminent researchers/friends have carried out - that would take away the fun of discovering some of the insights presented in the book - I must say that the book had great appeal for me as a business-person, as a family man & parent and as a person living in society at large. It has some very important implications for people working in government who are responsible for policy-making and for individuals who wish to avoid making mistakes they could've been making repeatedly. In all honesty, my behaviour has changed in some measure after reading this book and I think the results that I can monitor in the short-term, are positive. A really, really good book!!!

why we do what we do - amazing5
A well written and engaging look at some "irrational" behaviors that turn out to be - who knew?!?! - a whole lot less randon than we thought. I may never look at a sale flyer, or even a resturant menu the same way again.

Starred Review. In bestseller Berry's fourth thriller to feature ex–Justice Department agent Cotton Malone (after The Venetian Betrayal), Malone embarks on a search for answers about his father, Capt. Forrest Malone, after learning that instead of dying in 1971 in a nuclear sub accident in the North Atlantic, his father actually died while on a secret submarine mission to the Antarctic. Meanwhile, bad guy Adm. Langford Ramsey schemes to become the next ranking officer of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. The two story lines merge as a group led by Malone races to Antarctica, where they find a strange underground city belonging to the Aryans, an advanced race who inhabited the earth at the dawn of our own civilization. A meticulous researcher, Berry carefully integrates such elements as Charlemagne, Nazis, ancient manuscripts, historical puzzles and scientific surprises into the plot. Those who relish suspense in the Da Vinci Code vein will snap this one up, the best yet in the series. 10-city author tour. (Dec.)

"Berry outdoes himself in his latest Cotton Malone adventure (after The Venetian Betrayal ). Using his connections in the federal government, Cotton asks to see a classified file that details the mission that resulted in his father's death. He knew his father died on a submarine but none of the shocking details about where or why he died. But Cotton is not the only person who wants this file, and they kill to get it. Nazi missions to the Antarctic, ancient societies, and a valuable artifact from Charlemagne's tomb all play key roles as Malone uncovers the truth. Review
"In bestseller Berry's fourth thriller to feature ex–Justice Department agent Cotton Malone (after The Venetian Betrayal), Malone embarks on a search for answers about his father, Capt. Those who relish suspense in the Da Vinci Code vein will snap this one up, the best yet in the series." - Publishers Weekly (starred review)

So much is going on that there is enough material for two good books, let alone one great one. Mixed in with the complicated action, Berry finds the time to explore the characters as well, making this his most personal and best book to date. For all fiction collections." - Library Journal

Fact, fiction, educated conjecture, and strong characterization5
THE CHARLEMAGNE PURSUIT, Steve Berry's latest work, is a 500-plus-page opus that combines fact, fiction, educated conjecture and strong characterization while maintaining rapid-fire readability at all times.

Main protagonist Cotton Malone once again is the lynchpin that holds together what transpires. This time, though, he shares the spotlight with Edwin Davis, a presidential deputy national security advisor, and Stephanie Nelle. Nelle is the head of a U.S. Justice Department lawyer task force in Atlanta, Georgia, and a member of Magellan Billet, an off-the-book operation from which Malone is ostensibly retired. All are drawn together by two events taking place half a world apart.

Malone is approached in Germany by Dorothea Lindauer, a mysterious woman who claims a tragic kinship with Malone. Malone's father, Forrest, a U.S. Navy captain, died tragically at sea in 1971 when Malone was 10 years old. Malone had been told that he perished in a submarine disaster in the North Atlantic. But what Lindauer reveals is that Forrest actually lost his life while commanding a secret prototype nuclear submarine on a classified mission beneath the Antarctic ice shelves. It turns out that Lindauer's father was on the sub as well. Malone requests and obtains the military files on the incident from Nelle and learns that what Lindauer is telling him is true. Lindauer wants Malone's assistance in determining the final fate of the sub and their respective fathers, but she has an additional stake in the investigation.

Lindauer and her twin sister, Christl Falk, are locked in a battle for the fortune that their conniving mother has promised to whomever of them can discover the ultimate fate of their father, who had his own reasons for being on the sub. A former Nazi, he had been part of a Third Reich exploration of Antarctica in 1938 that had been organized as the result of cryptic clues discovered in the tomb of Charlemagne. As Malone begins his investigation, reluctantly involving himself with the warring sisters, he learns of the existence of a series of journals written in an unknown script referred to as "the language of heaven." These lead Malone across France and Germany and ultimately to Antarctica, where he will experience two major revelations: one with potential consequences for humanity, and the other that will personally affect him to the very depth of his being.

While Malone conducts his investigation and pursuit, events in the United States are being influenced by his quest. His inquiry into the military files concerning his father's death has attracted the attention of Langford Ramsey, an overly ambitious and almost universally detested Navy admiral who has his sights set on a vacant seat among the Joint Chiefs of Staff --- a vacancy he created. Early in his career, Ramsey led a top-secret mission to the Antarctic in 1971 to determine the fate of Forrest Malone and his crew. He has kept secret what he discovered and is trying to keep Malone away from it, permanently, even as he pursues his own ambitions at home with a ruthlessness that is startling. Only Nelle and Davis stand in Ramsey's way, even as his nomination to the Joint Chiefs --- and beyond --- seems assured.

Berry brings both plots to a steady boil; they run to a fast-paced but measured conclusion --- it is impossible to stop reading during the book's final half --- which not only presents an interesting and plausible explanation of one aspect of history's many mysteries, but also provides readers with a key piece of information regarding Malone's background. And notwithstanding an exciting, almost exhaustive denouement, Berry pulls off the very neat trick of leaving his readers wanting even more, teasing the next novel with an ending that begins the events of that yet-to-be-seen work. If that isn't enough, he additionally provides fodder for thriller aficionados, name checking (very briefly) another author's character and naming a secondary character after the spouse of a prominent thriller author.

There is literally something for everyone in THE CHARLEMAGNE PURSUIT, and all of it is great.

Decent Thriller3
Good book. The plot moves along quickly, and has plenty of surprises. I was mildly annoyed by all the double and triple-crossing going on near the end, but the end result was satisfying enough to make up for it. Also, I appreciated the author's note at the end that detailed exactly what was true, what was "inspired by truth" and what was total fiction. Overall, I thought the author did an excellent job of integrating the history he wanted to tell in his plot without skimping on realizing or bringing the book to a screeching halt.

last two books excellent5
I've read all his books in the last two months. Each gets better, but Venetian Betrayal and Charlemagne Pursuit are a step above the rest. I can't wait for the next books.

Good as a temporary iPod or for workouts.5
I've bought two of these to temporarily replace larger, more expensive iPods that have been stolen or broken. They're a good replacement if you buy from the iTunes Music Store.

Bulk-less music on the go.5
This iPod Shuffle is my second iPod so there were no surprises in the box.
With my massive 160GB iPod Classic I bring all my music with me everywhere I go. I listen to it all day everyday at work. Yesterday I was grooving to Reggae while snowblowing the driveway. Sometimes the iPod Classic is too big and kind of in the way. The iPod Shuffle is the perfect answer to this "little" problem. Though limited by the 1GB size, I can fill it and empty and refill it at will. I find the small size ideal for the Gym. Low profile and light weight design makes it ideal to clip to my tshirt for lifting or cardio. Never in the way but always present - this thing rocks (and reggae's too).
I picked the green color and was happy to find the color depicted on Amazon.com to be right on the money. Speaking of money, I found this Shuffle cheaper here online than advertised at my local bigbox exectronics stores. For those of you who seek instant gratification; My Shuffle showed up at my house so quickly, it's hardly worth the trip to the mall. 2 days.

Perfect Size & weight. Awesome clip design.5
My Wife & I both have full-sized ipods w/ lots more songs & features but when we go to work out we both fight over who gets to use the nano! The clip design is awesome. Clip it to your shorts, put it on shuffle and you don't even know it's there! It's never fallen off either. The must have for anyone working out w/ there ipod. Perfect for travel too as it takes up almost no space (easy to lose though).

Hands down the best mp3 player on the market if you're looking for portability. If you listen to music while you run, this is the best. Small enough to where it won't get in your way.

Apple has the easiest to use mp3 players and this is no exception. You know how to use it without reading the instructions. Plug it into a computer and it just works.

This is a great product!!

Although I've only had this item for less than a week I can say that it has not broken yet which is a positive. The sound quality is fantastic for this little device and when I say little I mean very small which is great.

Amazon.com Review
Jeannette Walls's father always called her "Mountain Goat" and there's perhaps no more apt nickname for a girl who navigated a sheer and towering cliff of childhood both daily and stoically. In The Glass Castle, Walls chronicles her upbringing at the hands of eccentric, nomadic parents--Rose Mary, her frustrated-artist mother, and Rex, her brilliant, alcoholic father. To call the elder Walls's childrearing style laissez faire would be putting it mildly. As Rose Mary and Rex, motivated by whims and paranoia, uprooted their kids time and again, the youngsters (Walls, her brother and two sisters) were left largely to their own devices. But while Rex and Rose Mary firmly believed children learned best from their own mistakes, they themselves never seemed to do so, repeating the same disastrous patterns that eventually landed them on the streets. Walls describes in fascinating detail what it was to be a child in this family, from the embarrassing (wearing shoes held together with safety pins; using markers to color her skin in an effort to camouflage holes in her pants) to the horrific (being told, after a creepy uncle pleasured himself in close proximity, that sexual assault is a crime of perception; and being pimped by her father at a bar). Though Walls has well earned the right to complain, at no point does she play the victim. In fact, Walls' removed, nonjudgmental stance is initially startling, since many of the circumstances she describes could be categorized as abusive (and unquestioningly neglectful). But on the contrary, Walls respects her parents' knack for making hardships feel like adventures, and her love for them--despite their overwhelming self-absorption--resonates from cover to cover. --Brangien Davis

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. Freelance writer Walls doesn't pull her punches. She opens her memoir by describing looking out the window of her taxi, wondering if she's "overdressed for the evening" and spotting her mother on the sidewalk, "rooting through a Dumpster." Walls's parents—just two of the unforgettable characters in this excellent, unusual book—were a matched pair of eccentrics, and raising four children didn't conventionalize either of them. Her father was a self-taught man, a would-be inventor who could stay longer at a poker table than at most jobs and had "a little bit of a drinking situation," as her mother put it. With a fantastic storytelling knack, Walls describes her artist mom's great gift for rationalizing. Apartment walls so thin they heard all their neighbors? What a bonus—they'd "pick up a little Spanish without even studying." Why feed their pets? They'd be helping them "by not allowing them to become dependent." While Walls's father's version of Christmas presents—walking each child into the Arizona desert at night and letting each one claim a star—was delightful, he wasn't so dear when he stole the kids' hard-earned savings to go on a bender. The Walls children learned to support themselves, eating out of trashcans at school or painting their skin so the holes in their pants didn't show. Buck-toothed Jeannette even tried making her own braces when she heard what orthodontia cost. One by one, each child escaped to New York City. Still, it wasn't long before their parents appeared on their doorsteps. "Why not?" Mom said. "Being homeless is an adventure."

From Bookmarks Magazine
"Being homeless is an adventure," Walls’s mom used to say. In her extraordinary memoir, Walls recalls her nomadic life with surprising affection—though she would not want to relive it. The title, which derives from her father’s dream house, serves as an apt metaphor for the Walls’ fragility. Yet Walls sheds no tears nor succumbs to self-pity—she probably learned early on they would get her nowhere. Instead of condemning her parents’ foibles, she unblinkingly examines how they transformed hardship into family romance and adventure. Sharing incredible, painful experiences in no-nonsense prose, Walls has, as The New York Times Book Review notes, "succeeded in doing what most writers set out to do—to write the kind of book they themselves most want to read."

absolutely stunning5
I decided to read this book for a school project; after reading the first few pages, I was hooked. Immediately the story drew me in, and I could not seem to put it down. The writing was so detailed, so genuine, so heartfelt... I found myself becoming incredibly attached to the Walls family as I read. This book made me laugh, cry, and gasp (often all at once). Reading it right around thanksgiving as I did, I found it a very appropriate read for the time, as the holiday season approaches; this book is sure to warm your heart, despite the many challenges this family faced! I was very ignorant of the state in which so many people even in the U.S. live at this very moment -- I knew that many are homeless, but I had never imagined the trials the Walls family endured -- and The Glass Castle certainly opened my eyes to the fact that there is so much that we could be doing to help out others in need.

My favorite memoir5
I prefer to read memoirs and true stories. This book is my favorite one and I have recommended to friends, and so far all of them loved it. I just sent a copy to my sister in CA.

Jeepers, 1,141 Reviews..., and counting5
(I've never seen a book with so many reviews.)

It was a difficult but important read for me because I'm writing my own memoir about a difficult childhood, and the rawness of the depicted neglect brought back painful memories. At least Jeanette had parents; mine left me in an orphanage where children were tortured.

Mostly I read it on the subway, BART, a few pages at a time, but sometimes a full chapter, alone in my apartment. In the process I felt a bond with Jeannette and her siblings--unilateral as it was. Envy was there too. Those parents seemed really interesting.

Thank you, Jeannette, for sharing a powerful story in such an intimate, clear, compassionate, accessible manner and for lighting the way for others.

Amazon.com Review
The year is 1929, and newlyweds George and Serena Pemberton travel from Boston to the North Carolina mountains where they plan to create a timber empire. Although George has already lived in the camp long enough to father an illegitimate child, Serena is new to the mountains--but she soon shows herself to be the equal of any man, overseeing crews, hunting rattle-snakes, even saving her husband's life in the wilderness. Together this lord and lady of the woodlands ruthlessly kill or vanquish all who fall out of favor. Yet when Serena learns that she will never bear a child, she sets out to murder the son George fathered without her. Mother and child begin a struggle for their lives, and when Serena suspects George is protecting his illegitimate family, the Pembertons' intense, passionate marriage starts to unravel as the story moves toward its shocking reckoning.

Rash's masterful balance of violence and beauty yields a riveting novel that, at its core, tells of love both honored and betrayed.

The Gift of Silence: An Essay by Ron Rash

When readers ask how I came to be a writer, I usually mention several influences: my parents’ teaching by example the importance of reading; a grandfather who, though illiterate, was a wonderful storyteller; and, as I grew older, an awareness that my region had produced an inordinate number of excellent writers and that I might find a place in that tradition. Nevertheless, I believe what most made me a writer was my early difficulty with language.

My mother tells me that certain words were impossible for me to pronounce, especially those with j’s and g’s. Those hard consonants were like tripwires in my mouth, causing me to stumble over words such as “jungle” and “generous.” My parents hoped I would grow out of this problem, but by the time I was five, I’d made no improvement. There was no speech therapist in the county, but one did drive in from the closest city once a week.

That once a week was a Saturday morning at the local high school. For an hour the therapist worked with me. I don’t remember much of what we did in those sessions, except that several times she held my hands to her face as she pronounced a word. I do remember how large and empty the classroom seemed with just the two of us in it, and how small I felt sitting in a desk made for teenagers.

I improved, enough so that by summer’s end the therapist said I needed no further sessions. I still had trouble with certain words (one that bedevils me even today is “gesture”), but not enough that when I entered first grade my classmates and teacher appeared to notice. Nevertheless, certain habits of silence had taken hold. It was not just self-consciousness. Even before my sessions with the speech therapist, I had convinced myself that if I listened attentively enough to others my own tongue would be able to mimic their words. So I listened more than I spoke. I became comfortable with silence, and, not surprisingly, spent a lot of time alone wandering nearby woods and creeks. I entertained myself with stories I made up, transporting myself into different places, different selves. I was in training to be a writer, though of course at that time I had yet to write more than my name.

Yet my most vivid memory of that summer is not the Saturday morning sessions at the high school but one night at my grandmother’s farmhouse. After dinner, my parents, grandmother and several other older relatives gathered on the front porch. I sat on the steps as the night slowly enveloped us, listening intently as their tongues set free words I could not master. Then it appeared. A bright-green moth big as an adult’s hand fluttered over my head and onto the porch, drawn by the light filtering through the screen door. The grown-ups quit talking as it brushed against the screen, circled overhead, and disappeared back into the night. It was a luna moth, I learned later, but in my mind that night it became indelibly connected to the way I viewed language--something magical that I grasped at but that was just out of reach.

In first grade, I began learning that loops and lines made from lead and ink could be as communicative as sound. Now, almost five decades later, language, spoken or written, is no longer out of reach, but it remains just as magical as that bright-green moth. What writer would wish it otherwise.

From The New Yorker
Set in 1929, in the rugged mountains of North Carolina, Rashs novel is a tightly knit tale of industrial development, greed, and betrayal. George Pemberton and his new bride, Serena, maintain a close watch over a burgeoning logging empire, dealing with their workers while fighting off the efforts of environmental activists to expand the countrys network of national parks. As the title charactera Depression-era Lady Macbeth wholly comfortable in the wildernessdrives her husband to commit increasingly malevolent acts, he must also contend with the reemergence of a woman with whom he had an illegitimate child years earlier. Rashs evocative rendering of the blighted landscape and the tough characters who inhabit it recalls both John Steinbeck and Cormac McCarthy, while the malignant character of Serena, who projects a stark unflinching certainty about her actions, propels his finely paced story.

From The Washington Post
From The Washington Post's Book World/washingtonpost.com Reviewed by Ron Charles Serena, the Lady Macbeth of Ron Rash's stirring new novel, wouldn't fret about getting out the damned spot. She wouldn't even wash her hands; she'd just lick it off. I couldn't take my eyes off this villainess, and any character who does ends up dead. Alluring and repellant, she's the engine in a gothic tale of personal mayhem and environmental destruction set in the mountains of North Carolina during the Depression. We meet her as the new bride of a timber baron arriving to survey 34,000 acres of virgin land that she and her husband, Pemberton, hope to strip as quickly as possible. The other investors don't bring their wives into the mountains like this, but Serena is no ordinary wife. At the start of the novel, the newlyweds are intercepted at the train station by the father of a pregnant 16-year-old girl. Pemberton can't even remember her name, but he doesn't doubt she's carrying his baby; Serena is unfazed. "You're a lucky man," she tells the girl's father, who's seething with drunken rage. "You'll not find a better sire to breed her with." Then she turns to the girl: "But that's the only one you'll have of his. I'm here now." Yikes, is she ever. Wearing her leather jodhpurs and black boots, she strides through the story that follows with frightening self-confidence. She speaks with unquestioned authority to Pemberton's employees, rough-hewn men who've lived in these isolated hills for generations. The orphaned daughter of a wealthy timber man in Colorado, she immediately impresses even the most skeptical lumberjacks with her shrewd knowledge of the business. She can calculate board feet just by glancing at a towering tree, and though she attended finishing school in New England, she prefers the Spartan accommodations of her husband's Appalachian camp. "Money freed to buy more timber tracts," she reassures him. Drill, baby, drill! Rash portrays them as the perfect power couple, not a match made in heaven, perhaps, but someplace much lower. "Their meeting wasn't mere good fortune," Serena insists, "but inevitability." A strapping, commanding man of 27, Pemberton is thrilled to have found a woman so in tune with his spirit, even if she sometimes pushes him toward actions more deadly than prudent. Nothing heats up their bed more than rubbing out a too-cautious investor or a potential opponent. Holding Serena in his arms, feeling her "severe keenness," he's filled with "a sense of being unshackled into some limitless possibility." Serena is a blazing expansion of a short story in Rash's 2007 collection, Chemistry. Among other things, the longer form gives Rash room to set the ambitions of this rapacious couple against a seminal moment in the environmental movement. Even as Pemberton and Serena dream of denuding every mountain in Appalachia, the secretary of the interior, with backing from John D. Rockefeller, is aggressively buying up and seizing property for the creation of Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Owners like Pemberton could make a fortune by raping the land before they lost or sold it to the government. Rash gracefully folds this history into his fictional drama and includes several other real-life figures, such as the nature writer Horace Kephart. The political battle that rumbles in the background of the novel is all too sadly reminiscent of the one we're still fighting over vast tracts of untouched land. Rash, who teaches Appalachian cultural studies at Western Carolina University, constantly reminds us of what's at stake: "As the crews moved forward," he writes, "they left behind an ever-widening wasteland of stumps and slash, brown clogged creeks awash with dead trout. . . . The valley and ridges resembled the skinned hide of some huge animal." But Rash's description of the laborers is filled with awe for the hellish conditions they endure, working six 11-hour shifts a week, in all weather. When winter arrives, frostbite is a fair trade for snakebites. In startling, brief scenes, we see men sliced, impaled, drowned and crushed. "Some used cocaine to keep going and stay alert," he writes, "because once the cutting began a man had to watch for axe blades glancing off trees and saw teeth grabbing a knee and the tongs on the cable swinging free or the cable snapping. . . . If you could gather up all the severed body parts and sew them together, you'd gain an extra worker every month." As the Depression grinds on, though, there are always cheap, willing replacements. In addition to writing short stories, Rash is also a fine poet, and he brings a poet's concision and elliptical tendencies to this novel. As a result, these scenes and conversations constantly suggest more than they show, a technique that renders them alluring, sometimes erotic, often frightening. And his restraint is a necessity to keep this gothic tale from slipping into campiness. That's a real danger when you've got a beautiful murderess striding around the forest with a pet eagle on her wrist and a one-armed goon at her side. Frankly, it's sometimes difficult to catch the author's tone in these passages; the book seems deadly serious, but there are moments -- the bizarre battle between Serena's eagle and a komodo dragon, for instance -- when one suspects that Rash is rolling his eyes, too. But this is the challenge of the gothic novel: managing the accretion of excesses in a way that doesn't break the spell. The blind hag who delivers prophesies to the lumbermen, the insane preacher who warns of impending doom, even the portentous eclipse of the moon -- all these details rise up just right. The only weakness may be Serena herself; as her ambitions begin to outpace her husband's, I couldn't help feeling that she was shrinking toward a caricature of evil. But by then, it's too hypnotic to break away from. Innocent people are in peril, and calamity seems as unstoppable as the millions of board feet Pemberton's men send surging down the river. And the final chapter is as flawless and captivating as anything I've read this year, a perfectly creepy shock that will leave you hearing nothing but the wind between the stumps.

Nothing Serene About This Serena4
SERENA opens and closes with murder and there are plenty of other awful deaths and horrible deeds in between. Memorable characters abound from the ruthless title character to the Appalachian folks she and her almost equally awful husband so carelessly exploit. Descriptions of lumber camp life in the 1930's come alive to a distressing degree. The novel has been compared to MACBETH though Lord and Lady M were models of restraint and virtue compared to the Pembertons of SERENA. Though this is an excellently written book with important themes I'm only giving four stars since all that evil and misery was so disturbing to read I can't fully recommend it to all readers.

Hell hath no fury...4
Serena, first introduced as a short story, is a gripping novel set in North Carolina during the depression. I'm familiar with logging history of the Pacific Northwest and find myself cringing at how logging was handled in Appalachia in the 20's.
But this is not a story about logging. Rash has crafted a tale about people who seem very real. Pemberton is a wealthy timber baron whose obsession with Serena's beauty makes him blind to her lack of a soul. Serena is way ahead of her time--she does not ride her horse side saddle, thank you very much. She will not let anything or anyone stand in the way of her lust for power. She set her sights on Pemberton from the moment she saw him, but it wasn't love she was feeling. Serena has no capacity for love. There is something in her past that is hinted at, but never detailed that made me wonder: did this dark incident in her past make her so cold and unfeeling, or did she bring it about herself? The eagle she buys and trains is symbolic of Serena, and I imagine them sharing the same cold, unflinching eyes.
I enjoyed the backdrop of the logging business itself and the political fight for the creation of National Parks.
When I see a logging truck go by, those logs appear as dead bodies to me, so you can imagine which side of this fight I would have found myself on. There was money in those trees, and for people like Serena clearcutting the entire Appalachian Range would not have been enough.
There are many minor characters in this novel as well. All are interesting and even the most minor characters seem true. Rachel, the young mother of Pemberton's illegitimate son grows stronger with each passing day and her love for her son drives her to protect him any way she can.
My only complaint would be that some elements seem somewhat out of place for that era. I won't go into the details of what bothered me specifically because they aren't enough to spoil the enjoyment of this fine novel. A little editing and this might get 5 stars from me.
Well written, engaging, with a hugely satisfying end. Highly recommended.

Stunning5
This book will stay with the reader in much the same was as Steinbeck holds onto you and won't let you go.

Harsh realties abound in this stunning book when George Pemberton, the timber baron, disembarks from the train in North Carolina with his new wife Serena and are greeted by an angry father and a very pregnant young girl. What ensues sets the tone for this often brutal and very greedy look into the depression era timber industry.

Serena is no prim and proper lady, she is just as determined as any man and when she sets her sights on Pemberton, she got what she wanted even if he wasn't so sure that it should be taken at no cost.

When Serena begins to see a person getting into her way, there is no problem tracking them down and having the problem dealt with, this isn't just other businessmen, this is anyone. Anyone that Serena sees as a threat to her plans. A little too late Pemberton see what type of monster he has helped to create but his need for money and power allows him to turn a blind eye to the destruction of both forest and humanity.

The visuals that Rash gives you in both character and setting are truly amazing, you fall into this book and lose your own surroundings and time. He draws such a complete picture that you truly feel that you are there and that these people are real. The ending is beyond a doubt stunning and leaves you breathless and with more questions. Truly a great find and one that you will want to pass on to your friends.

I have 11 webkinz now, and they are so much fun! the yellow lab is the cutest plush made (in my humble opinion) and online, you can design and decorate your own house for your pet(s). you can take them to the arcade, the question corner(hense the educational portion) and even cook food for them. You must buy another webkinz each year and add it to the same account, or it will deactivate your account, but that's the only downside to these cute little guys. site is simple enough for my 6 year old sister, complex enough for my 12 year old brother. anyway a great toy!

The eyes are black, white teeth, soft ears. I recommend it for any bat lover or child. I would even buy a larger version of this also if it were made bigger, perhaps twice this size so the wings can curl around ones neck enough to hang on. So very cute.

Just as cute as it looks!5
My girls are obsessed with Webkinz, this one is just as cute as it looks! With the online codes they can get online and play interactive games with their pet! My girls are 3, 6, and 9 and all of them love their Webkinz!

Interactive Fun4
Great website and games for your children. Endless customization of the pet's living area, clothes, and toys. The only issue is server traffic causes many hangups and time outs. Webkinzs needs more servers or better traffic management.

Great toy!!5
I bought this for my granddaughter... I cannot tell you just how cute it is!! She really enjoys playing with the online portion of the toy. The only draw back is the online site sign-on is only good for ONE year then it expires. Then What?

Can't be better5
I love my webkinz bottle nosed dolphin. It was only my second webkinz so I got an underwater room. My toy chihuahua gets a cool bubble when it enters the room. It has it's own cool underwater theme that you can only put in an underwater room. The only other pets are the goldfish and the manatee. I think it is cool that it is the only webkinz that has eyebrows. You can only hears it's own voice at doctor Quacks office. When I got it, I got the tractor and the dolphin fountain. Only dolphin owners can get it unless someone sends it to you. It has the webkinz logo on it`s flipper. It is soft and cuddly. On webkinz it's favorite food is hot hermit crab cookies. I like it also because I got it from amazon.com and it came very fast. I am allergic to fur that comes off when you pet it but it has short velvety fur that does not come off when you comb it. It is very cuddly and I can not sleep without it. I am my moms daughter named Nalanda Holly Lamb. I named my bottle nosed dolphin Misty. On webkinz my username is Holly515. Hope you like my review!

P.S. don't throw away the tag!

Website is horrible1
That each stuffed animal comes with access to a fun website is a big plus and a large part of why you would pay what you pay for a small stuffed animal. However, the website is constantly down. The problems range from not being able to log on to being booted off after 1-2 minutes of play. A topic of conversation in our house is when one of the kids say, "Hey, I was able to be on Webkinz for over ten minutes today without being booted off." Ganz knows of the problem but rather than fixing the website pockets the profits. Do a websearch on webkinz or Ganz and you will see 100's of similar complaints. Oh, writing to Ganz gets you no response.

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review
Great love stories thrive on sacrifice. Throughout The Twilight Saga (Twilight, New Moon, and Eclipse), Stephenie Meyer has emulated great love stories--Romeo and Juliet, Wuthering Heights--with the fated, yet perpetually doomed love of Bella (the human girl) and Edward (the vampire who feeds on animals instead of humans). In Breaking Dawn, the fourth and final installment in the series, Bella’s story plays out in some unexpected ways. The ongoing conflicts that made this series so compelling--a human girl in love with a vampire, a werewolf in love with a human girl, the generations-long feud between werewolves and vampires--resolve pretty quickly, apparently so that Meyer could focus on Bella’s latest opportunity for self-sacrifice: giving her life for someone she loves even more than Edward. How close she comes to actually making that sacrifice is questionable, which is a big shift from the earlier books. Even though you knew Bella would make it through somehow, the threats to her life, and to her relationship with Edward, had previously always felt real. It’s as if Meyer was afraid of hurting her characters too much, which is unfortunate, because the pain Bella suffered at losing Edward in New Moon, and the pain Jacob suffered at losing Bella again and again, are the fire and the heart that drive the whole series. Diehard fans will stick with Bella, Edward, and Jacob for as many twists and turns as possible, but after most of the characters get what they want with little sacrifice, some readers may have a harder time caring what happens next. (Ages 12 and up) --Heidi Broadhead

From Publishers Weekly
It might seem redundant to dismiss the fourth and final Twilight novel as escapist fantasy--but how else could anyone look at a romance about an ordinary, even clumsy teenager torn between a vampire and a werewolf, both of whom are willing to sacrifice their happiness for hers? Flaws and all, however, Meyer's first three novels touched on something powerful in their weird refraction of our culture's paradoxical messages about sex and sexuality. The conclusion is much thinner, despite its interminable length. [...] But that's not the main problem. Essentially, everyone gets everything they want, even if their desires necessitate an about-face in characterization or the messy introduction of some back story. Nobody has to renounce anything or suffer more than temporarily--in other words, grandeur is out. This isn't about happy endings; it's about gratification. A sign of the times? Ages 12–up. About the Author

Customer Reviews

such a great way to end the series5
I loved the way that she ended this series... I've actually read this last book several times... loved it!!!!

The good, the bad and the what the4
I came late in the whole Twilight - actually a week after Breaking Dawn came out. But I feel in love instantly with Bella and Edward. It was a great romance story. Girl moves to town that she hates, finds town has a couple secrets, falls for one of those secrets, secrets saves her in the end. And add that the secret is that he is hundred year old vampire is not sure if he wants her or her blood more, and you have a great love story.
The thing is Twilight could stand on it own as a great romance story, reviling that of Pride and Prejudice and Romeo and Juliet. All in all it's a great fairytale. Meyers took that fairytale and in her next three installments gave it reality. She made it into a story about a relationship - just that it's between vampire and girl - in all the problems that are in one.
Do I think Breaking Dawn is a good book - not on its own. The plot is somewhat odd to begin with. Where New Moon was the transition from that fairytale to the reality of a relationship (we do stupid things when we are in love). Eclipse dealt with the issues surrounding those mistakes (Jacob issue, the leaving issue, Bella now has to become a vampire issue or she will be killed because Edward jumped to a conclusion). Breaking Dawn is attempt to make the characters tie up lose ends. But I really felt the person who voice should have been the major player, and never was, was Edward.
Edward had a lot happening that I think should have be addressed more - much more than the other characters. First all was the dilemma of turning Bella into vampire. It something he both wants more than anything and doesn't agree with (talk about major conflict there), second during the pregnancy him dealing with the thing that is killing Bella (Ness) is his doing, his family wouldn't help him or listen to him about it, and add the one guy he can't stand, is protecting his family you have a very good story and at the end become friends. We never see much of Edward, and I think he gets lost, screaming out that he had more emotional things happening to him than Bella and Jacob. Bella has won, she got what she wanted at the end of Eclipse (Edward and vampire). Jacob is bitter, but not falling apart - we believe he will go off and imprint on some luck girl when he less expects it which goes into my next grip about the book.
The second thing I think Breaking Dawn lack is a closure for Jacob. To me, his imprinting on Ness was a cop out. It was like Meyers couldn't handle one of her characters not having a happy ending so just pulled something out of her hat. Jacob is not my favorite character; mostly I found him immature and whinny for my taste. If you are going to have romantic rival, they need to be a rival, not someone who is as annoying as your kid brother. But, I did felt bad he was still left dangling - let's let him fall in love with the baby and call it a day. No sorry, he should have fallen for Tanya or Kate, released that vampires have feeling too and apologies to Edward and Bella for being such a bigoted.
I personally thought the battle was good, not all wars are won with blood shed and most of them would have died, for just standing up saying the kid wasn't evil. And I love it that Bella went from the weakest player to the strongest player in the story. Even Edward accepted her like that - which is a great nod to feminist everywhere, that you can have a sexy, knight in shining arm that will let you slay the dragon too. She puts fear into the Volturi.
Plus if she ever wants to continue the story on, she left a very good plot wide open. Personally I think a series about Nessie and Volturi going after her would be great. Kill Jacob, add a new romantic interest - maybe a human and put a spin on the whole damsel in distress thing. Sorry Jacob.
As for Bella going vampire - it had to happen. She couldn't stay human forever, and what better way for her to show how much she loves him than to give up her life (so to speak) for him.
All in all I found the book good. It had a happy ending where two of my favorite literature couples are happy; they see hope and the world is right.
Do I think most teenage girls would understand it, nope - but I think in ten years when they experience their first real love, their first real heartache and their first stupid mistake while being in those relationships. I think they will appreciate what the books are about.

Happy Ending for Everyone?2
This book turned out to be disapointing for me. In the three books before, I could really relate to Bella, she was clumsy, made mistakes, sometimes reckless, and I could understand her thought process. In Breaking Dawn, I feel like she loses all of that. She turned into this flat character. I also didn't care much for the one-big-happy-family ending. A little more conflict and sacrifice would have made for a better read for me.

Good for families. 5
I had bought the other Biggest Loser cookbook but the problem with those recipes was it was for about one person at a time. This one is different in that it can feed more than one person--a family--and you get low cal, delicious recipes. The meals seem very nutritious and by eating this, a person would probably lose the weight--but you can't snack too much! All in all, this is a gret recipe book for those who want to feed their families good, nutritious foods. I also liked and would recommend, for dieting: Fatass No More! How I Lost Weight and Still Ate Cheeseburgers and Fries.

I had doubts but healthy really can taste amazing!!!5
Wow!! So far I've made at least 10 dishes from this cookbook and I am really impressed!! The ingredients are usually very easy to find and for the most part each recipe only requires a few ingredients. The recipes are mostly made for 1-4 servings which is convenient if you are single or if you are just cooking healthy for yourself and not for your whole family. I have been scaling the recipes up (if necessary) to make enough for my whole family and they are just as impressed by the meals even though they aren't trying to lose weight!! Since eating more wholesome meals I feel more full, more energetic and and just better overall.

Product was shipped quickly and I was kept informed of the transaction from start to finish. Would buy from this seller again.

Biggest Loser Cookbook has great recipes, my husband eats them.5
This cookbook is great and provided me with great stuff for my husband and I to eat. Trying to get Coach D to eat healthy is kinda hard. So if I fill him up on these great dishes, maybe I can keep him healthy. Most of the recipes are easy and quick to fix.

Cute as can be!5
This watch is the cutest thing...I love that the second (sweep) hand is a helicopter!! Great first watch for a rough and tumble boy without spending a ton.

This Watch is a WINNER!5
I ordered two of these watches. One for my 8-year-old son and his best friend. One box came in a gray packaging dated 2005. The other box came in red packaging dated 2007. Both watches worked. The boys were so excited when they opened them! They love to play "spy" missions and pretended to "talk" with each other through the watches. My son's friend has a hard time reading analag watches. Both of the hands on the dial are different colors. The smaller brown hand tells the hour and the longer green hand tells the minutes. My son's friend could now tell time without getting confused!! That was priceless. The band on the watch is a stretchy comfortable material that is very easy to adjust and it velcroes back to itself. The boys' favorite part of this watch is the indiglo nightlight on the face of the dial. I would buy this for any child without hesitation.

Not bad but losing time...4
We bought this watch for our five year old son. He loves it and keeps it by his nightstand each night when he goes to bed and puts it on first thing each morning. It has become a great tool as we begin to teach our son how to read time. We also like it over digital watches since all the clocks in our house and his school are analog. The only downside is it has begun to lose time. Not sure if we simply need to replace the battery but it is losing about 5 minutes a day. If the battery replacement fixes this then I would give it the full five stars as this watch is a great value for the money.

I purchased this watch for my son's sixth birthday; it was, and is, his favorite present, as it combines Legos and Star Wars in one item! The watch is easy enough for him to take on and off himself and easy to read as well. I also never saw this item anywhere else, so thanks to Amazon, we have it!

too flimsy for a kids watch1
my little boy loved this lego starwars watch but like legos it falls apart easilly. It was lost on the second day my son wore it, sad to see a little boy so disapointed.

Great Watch!5
Saw the reviews for this watch and was impressed so I bought it. WOW. It is really first class. The great box it arrives in and the elegant timepiece enclosed is extraordinary. It keeps impeccable time, is very easy to read, and looks great.

On top of all this by purchasing it from Amazon, Invicta extends the warranty to 5 years at no additional cost (plus Amazon provides free one-day delivery).

Get this watch. It is a great watch for the $325 list price and a steal for $49.99. You won't be sorry.

Great Watch at a Great Price5
This watch looks very impressive. On my first day wearing it I had numerous comments. It in no way looks or feels like a $49.00 watch. It is beefy and solid. If it is as durable as my other Invicta watches, this is a real steal at this price.

From AudioFile
Switching back and forth in short segments, two narrators portray authors Hall and Moore in memoirs that begin in distant walks of life and intersect in a homeless shelter. In the charming accent of an unschooled black man with a deep, scratchy voice, narrator Barry Scott recounts Denver Moore's life of hardship and misfortune, starting on a Louisiana plantation. In contrast, the subtle Southern accent of Dan Butler speaks for co-author Ron Hall, an educated white gentleman of comfortable means. The narrators play their parts of the drama so well that listeners will believe they are hearing the men who lived the story. In the end, the two individuals form an unlikely friendship resulting from charity and challenged by tragedy. J.A.H. © AudioFile 2008, Portland, Maine-- Copyright © AudioFile, Portland, Maine

same kind of different as you and me 4
This book was listed in a magazine as a good book for a book club and my club selected it for reading and discussion. Have just finished the book and enjoyed it immensely. Discussion to follow on Friday.

Humanity at Its Best5
This read was a quick one, but an important one. Each co-author provides a first-person account of how their "forged" relationship began, but despite their disparate backgrounds, one that grew to a unique friendship and bond that few people experience in life, but which more people should aspire to achieve. The co-autobiographical account was quite effective. While the message of the book is based on Christian teachings, which initially gave me pause, the authors refrain from proselytizing. Rather, they use the principles of charity, tolerance, and forgiveness to provide a unique narrative about how two ordinary men created an extraordinary bond.

From Publishers Weekly
The legions of readers who are hooked on the romantic struggles of Bella and the vampire Edward will ecstatically devour this third installment of the story begun in Twilight, but it's unlikely to win over any newcomers. Jake, the werewolf met in New Moon, pursues Bella with renewed vigilance. However, when repercussions from an episode in Twilight place Bella in the mortal danger that series fans have come to expect, Jake and Edward forge an uneasy alliance. The plot patterns have begun to show here, but Meyer's other strengths remain intact. The supernatural elements accentuate the ordinary human dramas of growing up. Jake and Edward's competition for Bella feels particularly authentic, especially in their apparent desire to best each other as much as to win Bella. Once again the author presents teenage love as an almost inhuman force: "[He] would have been my soul mate still," says Bella, "if his claim had not been overshadowed by something stronger, something so strong that it could not exist in a rational world." According to Meyer, the fourth book should tie up at least the Edward story, if not the whole shebang. Ages 12-up. (Aug.) Copyright 2007 Reed Business Information

Love the series!5
This whole series is written for the young adult audience so if you going in knowing that, then you won't be expecting too much. This is the third book in the series and fans can rejoyce that Edward is back saving Bella again. This book focuses on the love triangle now formed between Jacob, Bella, and Edward. Bella is eventually forced to choose between her two loves.

This book I didn't like as much as the other two only because of the character development of Jacob. Jacob comes off in this book less sensitive and more pushy. As another reader called him, a "rapist-in-training". That is was frustrated me with this book. Also, Bella's indecision was also frustrating when its clear to the reader what her heart truely desires. That being said, this book was still an enjoyable read and continued the saga well. I was able to read this book in about a day and couldn't wait to start Breaking Dawn.

If you have read Twilight and enjoyed it, then you must pick up this book as well because it does continue the story well and helps conclude the issue with Victoria. This whole series is best geared towards girls ages 12 and up but I am 25 I have enjoyed this series immensely.

Almost perfect...But.... (Spoilers beware)4
I'm a complete huge fan of the Twilight Saga and I've read all four and Eclipse is by far the best, in my opinion, out of all the series. Mainly because there's so much complexity in this book. You get to know the characters better and what I love about it is that you get to see how Jacob's and Edward's love grow even stronger for Bella. We get to see the true colors of each character and for those who aren't much of a Jacob Black fan, he kind of grows on you in this book because you would realize that he knows what he wants and I respect that about him. You know, as the relationship with Bella and Edward grows stronger, there are more obsticles they have to face...with Bella realizing she too is in love with Jacob and yet she becomes engaged to her one true love, Edward. Although there's a fourth book, at the end of this book you realize that their love is unbreakable and it really just conquers all.

HOWEVER there are character traits that are tolerable but something that kind of bothered me a bit.

1. Bella - It doesn't take about 400 pages to describe how she feels about Edward from him being perfect to how she just desires to have him. Not only that but she'd throw her life away and become a vampire just to spend FOREVER with Edward Cullen. I understand the fact that Edward Cullen is perfection but with this type of character, it's like sending out messages to teenage girls that it's okay to forget about everything else and give it all to your boyfriend.

2. Edward - I'm all for Edward. He's an old fashioned gentlemen, good looking, and everything...I just don't like the fact that we only get to see Edward through Bella's eyes and perspective (that's why we have Midnight Sun, but that's not the point). To us readers, all we know about him is "perfection" and that's kind of what we got from the book. When Bella apologized about kissing Jacob Black, what did he do? NOTHING. He was too perfect and too forgiving. It didn't seem realistic at all (I understand the fiction part). It would be much more interesting if he showed EXACTLY how he felt. He can be too peaceful and that's just not right to me at all. I love Edward Cullen but sometimes perfection doesn't seem to be as entertaining to read about.

One of the best book in Twilight series5
The triangle love of Bella, Edward and Jacob is the main part of this book. From the "friendship" between Bella and Jacob, become more complicated because of the "confession". Would Bella choose Edward or Jacob? I think everyone already had an answer. It just that do u like her choice or not. For me, after reading New Moon. I actually fall in love with Jacob this character. His confidence, his love for Bella and everything make me so crazy about him.

great book!5
This is a great book. Covers how to put together a perfect exposure very well. Are you tired of always struggling becuase there just wasn't enough light in that shot? You just had a bit too much blur then you wanted? You just don't understand how shutter speed, film speed and aperature work together and which one should be modified for this particular shot? Then read this book and have fun shooting in manual mode from now on and stop hoping that auto mode will get the picture right. :)

Good read, bad print quality4
This was a very informational book and I learned from it, but the photos are of horrible print quality due to a poor selection in publishing.

Exceptionally Well-Written Book!5
I had read a couple of other books on digital photography, although they were not specific to "exposure", but have to say that this book goes above and beyond those others (but they were good in their own rights). Bryan Peterson does an unbelievable job explaining the difference between a "correct" exposure and an "artistically correct" exposure. He gives you examples of what not to do, in addition to how to correct the problems - and doesn't just put perfect picures in the book to say "look how good I am". He breaks the different parts of exposure down so that even the beginning photographer - whether you wish to be a pro or not - can understand the different aspects of exposure. I HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone who is having trouble understanding exposure or wants to be a better photographer. Very well done, Mr. Peterson!

Amazon.com Review
Once again using an astutely written fictional tale to unambiguously but painlessly deliver some hard truths about critical business procedures, Patrick Lencioni targets group behavior in the final entry of his trilogy of corporate fables. And like those preceding it, The Five Dysfunctions of a Team is an entertaining, quick read filled with useful information that will prove easy to digest and implement. This time, Lencioni weaves his lessons around the story of a troubled Silicon Valley firm and its unexpected choice for a new CEO: an old-school manager who had retired from a traditional manufacturing company two years earlier at age 55. Showing exactly how existing personnel failed to function as a unit, and precisely how the new boss worked to reestablish that essential conduct, the book's first part colorfully illustrates the ways that teamwork can elude even the most dedicated individuals--and be restored by an insightful leader. A second part offers details on Lencioni's "five dysfunctions" (absence of trust, fear of conflict, lack of commitment, avoidance of accountability, and inattention to results), along with a questionnaire for readers to use in evaluating their own teams and specifics to help them understand and overcome these common shortcomings. Like the author's previous books, The Five Temptations of a CEO and Obsessions of an Extraordinary Executive, this is highly recommended. --Howard Rothman

From Publishers Weekly
In keeping with the parable style, Lencioni (The Five Temptations of a CEO) begins by telling the fable of a woman who, as CEO of a struggling Silicon Valley firm, took control of a dysfunctional executive committee and helped its members succeed as a team. Story time over, Lencioni offers explicit instructions for overcoming the human behavioral tendencies that he says corrupt teams (absence of trust, fear of conflict, lack of commitment, avoidance of accountability and inattention to results). Succinct yet sympathetic, this guide will be a boon for those struggling with the inherent difficulties of leading a group. 100,000 first printing.

From Library Journal
Building a cohesive team is not complicated, declares Lencioni, president of his own management consulting firm and author of The Five Temptations of a CEO. Departing from the dry, theoretical writing of many management books, he presents his case in the context of a fictional organization, and in doing so succeeds at communicating his ideas. The story is about a female CEO who is hired to bring together a dysfunctional executive staff to work as a team in a company that just two years earlier had looked promising. The scenarios that follow are recognizable and can be applied anywhere teamwork is involved, whether it is a multinational company, a small department within a larger organization, or a sports team. The five dysfunctions discussed are absence of trust, fear of conflict, lack of commitment, avoidance of accountability, and inattention to results. At the end of the story, the main points are summarized, and clearly written suggestions and exercises are offered to help bring about change. Concise and easy to follow, this book is recommended for academic and public libraries with management collections and for anyone who is a member of a team that needs improvement. The best book on teamwork, hands down5
As a book about teamwork, The Five Dysfunctions focuses on the problems and conflicts that often prevent groups of people working together from achieving their goals. The book is a fable that tells the story of a high-tech Silicon Valley company who is struggling under the weight of multiple egos in the executive suite. The board brings in a dynamic CEO who previously worked in manufacturing. The telling of the new CEO winning over the dysfunctional team is a realistic portrayal of a process anyone can use with their own team.

After the story component, the book provides a practical discussion of the methods used in the story. The five dysfunctions from the title are:

1) lack of trust
2) fear of conflict
3) unwillingness to commit
4) avoidance of accountability
5) inattention to results

These dysfunctions are all too common in the workplace and quite difficult to fix...until now. I read the book in a couple of hours and was able to begin applying the lessons the same week.

I discovered Patrick Lencioni after reading another book that he wrote the foreword for. It's also great and I strongly recommend it because it has been a huge help in my work: The Emotional Intelligence Quick Book

A fable nevertheless...4
Lencioni's book has become a classic by now. It's easy, upbeat writing style reinforces the lessons we learned as we became independent and learned by trial-and-error how to fit into the biggest team of all, society. Lencioni's teamwork model serves as an excellent framework upon which to build necessary self-analysis and then team analysis. If there is one shortcoming of the book, it's the gloss-over of the importance of communications. That said, the book would become unmanageable if it delved into effective communications practices. That leaves a wish for Santa this time of year: Would Mr. Lencioni please write a book on the seven dysfunctions of communication in the same entertaining style?

Know in advance if you're getting into a job with a great team dynamic!5
`The Five Dysfunctions of a Team' highlights the difference between an effective team and one that just isn't working. Patrick Lencioni explains that the five dysfunctions include an absence of trust, fear of conflict, lack of commitment, avoidance of accountability and inattention. He uses an example of a collapsing firm to demonstrate these problems.

After reading this book, recognizing whether or not any group you are involved or will be involved in is a functional one will be a fast realization.

On an individual level, knowing what you can do to make a team function more effectively can be a valuable skill to bring to the table. Knowing how to recognize a team you want to be involved in or not is also a must when seeking a new workplace.

From Publishers Weekly
Alexander, a pseudonymous air force officer, and writer Bruning (House to House), collaborate to tell the stranger-than-fiction story of the intelligence operation that located and ultimately killed Abu Musab Al Zarqawi, the head of al-Qaeda in Iraq. An Air Force investigator turned interrogator, Alexander was trained in the post–Abu Ghraib interrogation techniques that replace fear and control with respect, rapport, hope, cunning and deception. He arrived in Iraq in March 2006, a month after al-Qaeda bombed the Golden Dome Mosque in Samarra in an effort to incite sectarian violence, and Zarqawi became the most wanted man in Iraq and the primary focus of U.S. intelligence efforts. Using the new methods, Alexander interrogated five captured al-Qaeda members and tracked down Zarqawi's personal spiritual adviser, who unwittingly led U.S. Special Forces to Zarqawi's hideout; this vindicated Alexander's methods and eliminated the key terrorist leader. Alexander provides a front-row seat to the intelligence war inside the Global War on Terrorism in a riveting, fast-paced account that reads like a first-rate thriller. (Oct.)

Alexander, a pseudonymous air force officer, and writer Bruning (House to House), collaborate to tell the stranger-than-fiction "story of the intelligence operation that located and ultimately killed Abu Musab Al Zarqawi," the head of al-Qaeda in Iraq. An "Air Force investigator turned interrogator," Alexander was trained in the post-Abu Ghraib interrogation techniques that replace "fear and control" with "respect, rapport, hope, cunning and deception." He arrived in Iraq in March 2006, a month after al-Qaeda bombed the Golden Dome Mosque in Samarra in an effort to incite sectarian violence, and Zarqawi became "the most wanted man in Iraq" and the primary focus of U.S. intelligence efforts. Alexander provides a front-row seat to the intelligence war inside the "Global War on Terrorism" in a riveting, fast-paced account that reads like a first-rate thriller. --Publisher's Weekly, August 11, 2008

We don't have to become our enemies to defeat them," declares a U.S. Air Force officer who led a team of interrogators in Iraq. After the Abu Ghraib scandal, American interrogators adopted a gentler approach, writes the pseudonymous author, using respect, rapport, hope, cunning and deception to obtain information. His slow-moving book profiles a group of special agents and criminal investigators who introduced the new violence-free approach in questioning that ultimately led to the death in 2006 of Abu Musab Al Zarqawi, al-Qaeda's leader in Iraq. Assisted by veteran co-author Bruning (House to House, 2007, etc.), the officer conveys a vivid sense of the intense pressures facing those interrogators, who had to quickly apply the six weeks of training they received at "the Schoolhouse" (Fort Huachuca in Arizona) to ferret out the master terrorist behind a rash of suicide bombings. Much of the book focuses on the questioning of five well-dressed men, captured at a farmhouse "wedding," who turned out to be senior-level al-Qaeda leaders. Facing trial and imprisonment, each detainee was painstakingly cajoled, flattered and manipulated with favors and promises ("I'll take care of you. I'll try to help you as best I can") into revealing fellow terrorists' locations, which were promptly attacked by Special Forces. The Geneva Conventions were respected, although nothing was done to determine who was present at targeted sites before they were destroyed by bombing. The fact that two young children died along with Zarqawi prompts no more than a verbal shrug from the author: "Innocent people get hurt." A surprising number of the detainees were not religious zealots but simply Iraqis who went along with al-Qaeda to make ends meet; Abu Gamal, an electrician with two wives to support, made hundreds of roadside bombs to earn extra money ($50 per job). The author's gung-ho tone and such melodramatic lines as "we could change history" fail to boost a flat narrative.Fascinating and informative content, poorly delivered. (Kirkus Reviews)

Review
"[T]his is an excellent account of a high-profile victory in the often-hidden intelligence war that is at the heart of the U.S. effort in Iraq.... It is generally agreed that the Global War on Terrorism is first and foremost an intelligence war. Alexander's story offers us an absorbing behind-the=scenes look at the secret intelligence war within a war." -- www.military.com

A catalyst for change5
This is a very, very important book. It rekindles my belief in the integrity of America, it's moral values and my support for our brave men and women in the US military. This book should and will hopefully be the catalyst which changes the way we do things in Iraq, Afghanistan and all future military operations.

How to Break a Terrorist is a riveting story that teaches us that we, The United States, can win the war against terrorism; not by using brutality and coercion but by living up to the ideals which make our country great.

Once you begin reading How to Break a Terrorist, you will be drawn into the secret world of interrogation. You WILL NOT want to put the book down. Despite knowing the ending - you will be on the edge of your seat the entire journey.

A real nail-gripper...couldn't put it down5
As a mother of two young kids, I am very particular about the books I read because my spare time is too valuable to waste on mediocre books. I didn't know what to expect. Military history is not my typical genre, but the book title piqued my interest. I was not let down by the author. The book reads like a good novel and completely captivated my attention for hours. It still amazes me that the events depicted in this book really occurred.

Not only is "How to Break a Terrorist" a great book to read by the fire, I am heartened that there is a positive lesson learned from the Iraq war. Torture is not necessary. Bravo!

Excellent read5
Don't want to present any spoilers. Mr. Alexander tells a very compelling story about his experiences in Iraq. His story runs the gambit of emotions and really makes you think about what is happening in the wars that we are fighting. I also could not put the book down and read it over two days. Highly recommended for the story and the writing style.

not for the casual user4
Lyon's book is not for the casual nmap user. By that I refer to perhaps a sysadmin wondering if any of her systems are secure and just needs a quick run with nmap [and other tools] across her network. Instead, the book is an extensive discussion about the full capabilities of nmap. Since Lyon is the author of nmap, this book should be taken as authoritative. It goes far beyond the user manuals and guides that you might find on the net.

The book also has comparative assessments of other network diagnostic tools, like scanrand. One of the merits of the text is this analysis. Usually, if not invariably, the remarks point up deficiencies in those tools, vis a vis nmap. I don't know enough about the tools and nmap to tell if these are accurate. But the arguments do appear logical enough. Typically, most tool guides describe only the tool itself. Rarely do they compare it to other alternatives. Leaving the hapless sysadmin to assess from scratch, or to surf the web looking for reliable commentary that has comparisons.

Another reason for getting this book is if you intend to improve nmap or improve on it with another product. Sure, nmap is open source. But studying the innards of a large code package can be difficult. The nmap user manuals are at the user level, and not for programmers who want to understand the actual workings of source code. This book has detailed explanations of crucial algorithms used by nmap. You can use these to better follow the code.

The only Nmap book you need to read5
Earlier this year Fyodor sent me a pre-publication review copy of his new self-published book, Nmap Network Scanning (NNS). I had heard of Fyodor's book when I wrote my 3 star review of Nmap in the Enterprise in June, but I wasn't consciously considering what could be in Fyodor's version compared to the Syngress title. Although the copy I read was labelled "Pre-Release Beta Version," I was very impressed by this book. Now that I have the final copy (available from Amazon) in my hands, I am really pleased with the product. In short, if you are looking for *the* book on Nmap, the search is over: NNS is a winner.

I've reviewed dedicated "tool" books before, including titles about Snort, Nessus, and Nagios. NNS dives into the internals of Nmap unlike any other title I've read. Without Nmap author Fyodor as the author, I think any competitor would need to have thoroughly read the source code of the application to have a chance at duplicating the level of detail Fyodor includes in NNS.

Instead of just describing how to use Nmap, Fyodor explains how Nmap works. Going even further, he describes the algorithms used to implement various tests, and why he chose those approaches. The "Idle Scan Implementation Algorithsm" section in Ch 5 is a great example of this sort of material. I will probably just refer students of my TCP/IP Weapons School class to this part of NNS when we discuss the technique!

One of the best parts of NNS, mentioned but explained in no other text, is the Nmap Scripting Engine (NSE). Ch 9 is all about NSE, with a brief intro to Lua and excellent documentation of using and building upon NSE. Beyond this groundbreaking material readers will find many examples of Nmap case studies from users. This and other sections help make NNS a practical book, showing how people use Nmap in their environments for a variety of purposes.

If you use Nmap, for any reason, you should buy this book. Everyone (except author Fyodor) will learn something about network reconnaissance from this text.

Valuable book about an invaluable security tool5
The 1962 song Wipe Out, with its energetic drum solo started, was the impetus for many people to take up playing the drums. Similarly, Nmap, the legendary network scanner, likely interested many in the art of hacking, and for some, started a career for security professionals and hackers. Nmap and its creator Fyodor need no introduction to anyone on Slashdot. With that, Nmap Network Scanning: The Official Nmap Project Guide to Network Discovery and Security Scanning, is a most useful guide to anyone interested in fully utilizing Nmap.

One may ask, why spend $50 on this book, when the Nmap Reference Guide provides a significant amount of the basic information needed to use the tool, especially since the reference guide is both free, and well written. The reference guide is included in the book in chapter 15, and takes up 41 pages. And for those that are cash strapped, the free reference guide is the way to go.

In addition, the web site for the book notes that about half of the content is available in the free online edition. The most useful information is in the book in chapters exclusive to the print edition, which includes Detecting and Subverting Firewalls and Intrusion Detection System, Optimizing Nmap Performance, Port Scanning Techniques and Algorithms, Host Discovery, and troubleshooting.

The main benefit of the buying the book is that it has the collected wisdom of Fyodor's, in addition to numerous real-world scenarios, and Nmap commands not documented elsewhere. At over 400 pages, the books 15 chapters provide the reader with everything they need to know about using Nmap to the fullest.

Chapter 1 starts with an overview of the history of Nmap and how it came to be. As to the question of whether port scanning is legal, the author writes that it is best to avoid the debate and its associated analogies. He advises that it's best to avoid ISP abuse reports and criminal charges, by not annoying the target network administrators in the first place. Chapter 1 provides a number of practical suggestions on just how to do that.

A complaint against Nmap it that is has often been blamed for crashing systems. Chapter 1 shows that the reality is that Nmap will rarely be the primary cause of a system crash. The truth is that many of the systems that crashed as a result of an Nmap scan were likely unstable from the outset, and Nmap either pushed them over the top or they coincidentally crashed at the same time as the Nmap scan.

An ironic incident detailed in chapter 3 is when someone from the information security department of Target Corp. complained to the author that he felt the Nmap documentation was particularly directed at his organization; given the use of the term target. He requested that the Nmap documentation be changed from targetto example. The section on target enumeration in the book shows the author did not take that request to heart.

Another example of where the book goes beyond what is in the reference guide is where the author shows the most valuable TCP ports via his probe of tens of millions of IP addresses across the internet. Not surprisingly, ports 80 23 and 443 were the top three most commonly open TCP ports. It is surprising that other ports, which should have been secured long ago, are still as vulnerable as ever.

For the serious Nmap user, the book is worth purchasing just for the indispensable information in chapter 16, which is about optimizing Nmap performance. The author writes that one of his highest priorities in the creation of Nmap has been performance. Nmap uses parallelism and numerous advanced algorithms to execute its blazingly fast scans. This chapter shows how to create Nmap commands to obtain only the information you care about and significantly sped up the scan. The chapter details numerous scan time reduction techniques, and strategies on how to deal with long scans. The chapter concludes with the output of a user who, with a customized Nmap command, was able to reduce his scan of a 676,352 IP address network from nearly a week to 46 hours.

Chapter 10 is also a fascinating chapter on the topic of detection and subverting of firewalls and IDS. The function of such tests on an internal network is to help an organization understand the dangers and risks of a real attack. Since it is not uncommon for firewalls to be accidentally misconfigured, or have rule bases that leak from far too many rules; such a test can be quite useful to any network.

Nmap Network Scanning: The Official Nmap Project Guide to Network Discovery and Security Scanning is the guide for anyone who wants to get more out of Nmap. It is useful whether one is a novice and only getting into basic security testing, or an advanced user looking for ways to optimize Nmap.

The book takes a real-world approach on how to use the tool and clearly documents every Nmap feature and option. It also shows how the tool should be correctly used in various settings.

What is unique about is that this is a rare book in which the creator of the program wrote it. Linus Torvalds never got around to writing a Linux reference, nor did the creators of the Check Point firewall. In Nmap Network Scanning, the reader gets the story from the creator of the code itself. This then is the ultimate Nmap reference guide.

Aside from the history and use of the program in the first chapter, the rest of the book is an extreme guide to maximizing the use of Nmap. It is written by a programmer and written for the technically astute. Anyone who wants to maximize their use of Nmap will find no better reference.

Not surprisingly, the smokers were on edge, fidgety, not sure what to expect.

Barely noticing the rain and overcast skies, they clumped together outside the medical building in London, England, that houses the Centre for NeuroImaging Sciences. Some were self- described social smokers–a cigarette in the morning, a second snuck in during lunch hour, maybe half-a- dozen more if they went out carousing with their friends at night. Others confessed to being longtime two-pack-a-day addicts. All of them pledged their allegiance to a single brand, whether it was Marlboros or Camels. Under the rules of the study, they knew they wouldn’t be allowed to smoke for the next four hours, so they were busy stockpiling as much tar and nicotine inside their systems as they could. In between drags, they swapped lighters, matches, smoke rings, apprehensions: Will this hurt? George Orwell would love this. Do you think the machine will be able to read my mind?

Inside the building, the setting was, as befits a medical laboratory, antiseptic, no- nonsense, and soothingly soulless–all cool white corridors and flannel gray doors. As the study got under way I took a perch behind a wide glass window inside a cockpit-like control booth among a cluster of desks, digital equipment, three enormous computers, and a bunch of white-smocked researchers. I was looking over a room dominated by an fMRI (functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging) scanner, an enormous, $4 million machine that looks like a giant sculpted doughnut, albeit one with a very long, very hard tongue. As the most advanced brain- scanning technique available today, fMRI measures the magnetic properties of hemoglobin, the components in red blood cells that carry oxygen around the body. In other words, fMRI measures the amount of oxygenated blood throughout the brain and can pinpoint an area as small as one millimeter (that’s 0.03937 of an inch). You see, when a brain is operating on a specific task, it demands more fuel–mainly oxygen and glucose. So the harder a region of the brain is working, the greater its fuel consumption, and the greater the flow of oxygenated blood will be to that site. So during fMRI, when a portion of the brain is in use, that region will light up like a red-hot flare. By tracking this activation, neuroscientists can determine what specific areas in the brain are working at any given time.
Neuroscientists traditionally use this 32-ton, SUV-sized instrument to diagnose tumors, strokes, joint injuries, and other medical conditions that frustrate the abilities of X-rays and CT scans. Neuropsychiatrists have found fMRI useful in shedding light on certain hard-to-treat psychiatric conditions, including psychosis, sociopathy, and bipolar illness. But those smokers puffing and chatting and pacing in the waiting room weren’t ill or in any kind of distress. Along with a similar sample of smokers in the United States, they were carefully chosen participants in a groundbreaking neuromarketing study who were helping me get to the bottom–or the brain–of a mystery that had been confounding health professionals, cigarette companies, and smokers and nonsmokers alike for decades.

For a long time, I’d noticed how the prominently placed health warnings on cigarette boxes seemed to have bizarrely little, if any, effect on smokers. Smoking causes fatal lung cancer. Smoking causes emphysema. Smoking while pregnant causes birth defects. Fairly straightforward stuff. Hard to argue with. And those are just the soft- pedaled American warnings. European cigarette makers place their warnings in coal-black, Magic Marker—thick frames, making them even harder to miss. In Portugal, dwarfing the dromedary on Camel packs, are words even a kid could understand: Fumar Mata. Smoking kills. But nothing comes even close to the cigarette warnings from Canada, Thailand, Australia, Brazil–and soon the U.K. They’re gorily, forensically true-to-life, showing full- color images of lung tumors, gangrenous feet and toes, and the open sores and disintegrating teeth that accompany mouth and throat cancers.
You’d think these graphic images would stop most smokers in their tracks. So why, in 2006, despite worldwide tobacco advertising bans, outspoken and frequent health warnings from the medical community, and massive government investment in antismoking campaigns, did global consumers continue to smoke a whopping 5,763 billion cigarettes, a figure which doesn’t include duty-free cigarettes, or the huge international black market trade? (I was once in an Australian convenience store where I overheard the clerk asking a smoker, “Do you want the pack with the picture of the lungs, the heart, or the feet?” How often did this happen, I asked the clerk? Fifty percent of the time that customers asked for cigarettes, he told me.) Despite what is now known about smoking, it’s estimated that about one-third of adult males across the globe continue to light up. Approximately 15 billion cigarettes are sold every day–that’s 10 million cigarettes sold a minute. In China, where untold millions of smokers believe that cigarettes can cure Parkinson’s disease, relieve symptoms of schizophrenia, boost the efficacy of brain cells, and improve their performance at work, over 300 million people,1 including 60 percent of all male doctors, smoke. With annual sales of 1.8 trillion cigarettes, the Chinese monopoly is responsible for roughly one-third of all cigarettes being smoked on earth today2–a large percentage of the 1.4 billion people using tobacco, which, according to World Bank projections, is expected to increase to roughly 1.6 billion by 2025 (though China consumes more cigarettes than the United States, Russia, Japan, and Indonesia combined).
In the Western world, nicotine addiction still ranks as an enormous concern. Smoking is the biggest killer in Spain today, with fifty thousand smoking- related deaths annually. In the U.K., roughly one-third of all adults under the age of sixty-five light up, while approximately 42 percent of people under sixty-five are exposed to tobacco smoke at home.3 Twelve times more British people have died from smoking than died in World War II. According to the American Lung Association, smoking- related diseases affect roughly 438,000 American lives a year, “including those affected indirectly, such as babies born prematurely due to prenatal maternal smoking and victims of ‘secondhand’ exposure to tobacco’s carcinogens.” The health-care costs in the United States alone? Over $167 billion a year.4 And yet cigarette companies keep coming up with innovative ways to kill us. For example, Philip Morris’s latest weapon against workplace smoking bans is Marlboro Intense, a smaller, high-tar cigarette–seven puffs worth–that can be consumed in stolen moments in between meetings, phone calls, and PowerPoint presentations.5

It makes no sense. Are smokers selectively blind to warning labels? Do they think, to a man or a woman, Yes, but I’m the exception here? Are they showing the world some giant act of bravado? Do they secretly believe they are immortal? Or do they know the health dangers and just not care?
That’s what I was hoping to use fMRI technology to find out. The thirty-two smokers in today’s study? They were among the 2,081 volunteers from America, England, Germany, Japan, and the Republic of China that I’d enlisted for the largest, most revolutionary neuromarketing experiment in history.
It was twenty-five times larger than any neuromarketing study ever before attempted. Using the most cutting-edge scientific tools available, it revealed the hidden truths behind how branding and marketing messages work on the human brain, how our truest selves react to stimuli at a level far deeper than conscious thought, and how our unconscious minds control our behavior (usually the opposite of how we think we behave). In other words, I’d set off on a quest to investigate some of the biggest puzzles and issues facing consumers, businesses, advertisers, and governments today.

For example, does product placement really work? (The answer, I found out, is a qualified no.) How powerful are brand logos? (Fragrance and sound are more potent than any logo alone.) Does subliminal advertising still take place? (Yes, and it probably influenced what you picked up at the convenience store the other day.) Is our buying behavior affected by the world’s major religions? (You bet, and increasingly so.) What effect do disclaimers and health warnings have on us? (Read on.) Does sex in advertising work (not really) and how could it possibly get more explicit than it is now? (You just watch.)
Beginning in 2004, from start to finish, our study took up nearly three years of my life, cost approximately $7 million (provided by eight multinational companies), comprised multiple experiments, and involved thousands of subjects from across the globe, as well as two hundred researchers, ten professors and doctors, and an ethics committee. And it employed two of the most sophisticated brain- scanning instruments in the world: the fMRI and an advanced version of the electroencephalograph known as the SST, short for steady-state typography, which tracks rapid brain waves in real time. The research team was overseen by Dr. Gemma Calvert, who holds the Chair in Applied Neuroimaging at the University of Warwick, England, and is the founder of Neurosense in Oxford, and Professor Richard Silberstein, the CEO of Neuro-Insight in Australia. And the results? Well, all I’ll say for now is that they’ll transform the way you think ab...

Buy, Sell or Hold ?4
Martin Lindstrom is one of the worlds most reknown experts on marketing and branding. In Buyology he explains the science of the truth and lies about why we buy. The science part is because Martin strapped several hundred volunteers to fast-scan MRI devices to record which sections of their brain chemically changed and "lit up" when viewing, hearing or reading various marketing campaigns. He explores "does sex sell?" ; "does subliminal advertising actually work?" and more controversally, why branding is mentally equivalent to religion.

This is a pleasant and intriguing 200 page read that doesn't get too deep into the science, and has enough everyday anecdotes to maintain your interest. I just wish Lindstrom had expanded his thoughts into how to sell, based upon why we buy - then he would really have some insights!!

Basically good stuff4
Some excellent revelations, but laboured the point too much with anecdotal examples throughout. I felt the whole book could be summarized to about 50 pages. Still, definitely worth buying.

No meat2
This book was an interesting exercise in marketing. It starts out with an explanation of how totally cool and revolutionary the experiments were. Then, every chapter ends with a promise that in the next chapter you are finally going to learn something really REVOLUTIONARY. But you never do. I kept thinking: "Oh, this next chapter sounds like it's going to be great!" And then, it wasn't, but it looked like the next one might be. As far as I can tell, Lindstrom presents actual results from his much-hyped experiments in chapters 2 and 6. Maybe there are some minor results elsewhere that I have already forgotten. And these results aren't really ground-breaking, they just tend to back up what real psychologists have been writing about for years in much better books.

Anyway, the book has the feel of a short research article that was expanded into a book because it seemed like that might sell. Thus, there's a LOT of fluff, a LOT of space wasted on promising to tell us something really cool really soon, and very, very little actual information. Don't waste your time on this one.

What confuses me is all of the great reviews from places like Newsweek and the like. It makes me actually want to reread the book because it feels like I must have been missing something. I'm not going to, because I thought the book was worthless, but it makes me wonder: do people really not already know this stuff? If you know nothing about psychology, then, I guess, maybe this book could be interesting.

Review
"While being one of the most bullish and accurate forecasters for 20 years, Dent has always been warning that this great boom would end around 2008-2009. He now sees a bigger crash ahead and a deflationary environment that could ravage your portfolio. His warnings and predictions are well worth reading and taking seriously." -- David Bach, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Start Late, Finish Rich and The Automatic Millionaire

"While many talk of change these days, the real question lies in assessing in what direction things will change. Harry Dent does a masterful job using demographics and other key cycles to lay out where and when changes will come that will have sweeping ramifications for our pocketbooks, our way of life, and our nation. I cannot more highly recommend this book." -- Mark Sanford, governor of South Carolina

"Economists cannot forecast the economy very well, and most would admit it if their jobs didn't depend on the fiction that they can. So most economists become closet extrapolators, with some minor tweaking for visible pending developments and policy changes. Even I can see to the next corner pretty well, but I can't see around the corner. There is one exception, however. Demographics! Demography, as they say, is destiny. The reason is that you can see the future based on the facts of the present and demonstrated behavior. You can see the pig, or the pigs, going through the python.Harry Dent is the reigning expert in applying sophisticated demographic analysis to economic forecasting. His past record of getting it right speaks for itself. I hope he's wrong this time. I hope we don't have a great depression by 2010. But given his track record, I won't be betting against him." -- Robert D. McTeer, Distinguished Fellow, National Center for Policy Analysis, and former president of the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas

Excellent series every daughter must own5
We started off the Flower Fairies series with "How to Find Flower Fairies" which so encompassed my 3 year old daughter's imagination we decided to complete the collection.

Return to Fairyopolis is just as spectacular a pop-up from Ms. Barker. However it is probably good to note that the pop-ups are not as intricate and large as "How to Find Flower Fairies", however the art and craftsmanship do not fail. My daughter, at three years of age, is constantly wanting to read her fairy books. Something about these artworks captures the imagination. My daughter can sit there and be transfixed for quite some time.

These books are a value at their suggested retail of $19.99 so being able to purchase them at Amazon's discounted price makes this even better. Get the series, give them to your daughter and have hours of fun exploring in the backyard with her.

Has some charming features to captivate readers4
My favorite of these fairy books based on Cicely Mary Barker's illustrations is "How to Find Flower Fairies" which is filled with glorious pop-ups on each page [Garden Fairies, Tree-Top Fairies, Wayside Fairies, Marsh fairies etc]. It really brings the fairy world to life. Then there is Fairyopolis which is not so much a pop-up book but more of a collection of features such as lift-the-flaps, hidden notes, etc that still evoked the charming world of fairies as envisioned by the immensely talented Cicely Mary Barker [though the book itself was compiled by others based on her illustrations].

In this latest instalment titled "Return to Fairyopolis", I found that it was quite similar in layout to "Fairyopolis" but not as inspired. By going for the same, it seemed like the people who put it together were trying to ride on the popularity of the first book. That being said, this book does have charming features, new content and I especially liked the last two pages which is a full-color pop-up of the fairy world with sound effects. That to me was worth the price of the book [and it is sold at an appealing price here on Amazon].If you are a collector of Cicely Mary Barker's books and illustrations, or just a lover of all things fairy, then this will appeal to you.

Fantasy for grandma to enjoy5
This is wonderful. A real escape! This is my book and I don't allow my grandchildren to play with it.

From the Inside Flap
The sense of relief the world felt at the end of the Cold War has been replaced with a different kind of Armageddon nightmare. Instead of an East-West power struggle with the rest of the world on the sidelines, the collective dread this time is over terrorist organizations getting their hands on a nuclear weapon, then using it to effect chaos and collapse on civil society.

Written by two of the world's foremost nuclear weapons experts, The Nuclear Express addresses how the world got to where it is today. If we are to make the right choices now, we need to understand the history of nuclear weapons and the politics that surround them.

Instead of fertilizer, suppose that Mr. Yousef [first World Trade Center bombing] had been able to place a primitive, five-kiloton nuclear weapon in the back of his truck. Since that vehicle had a one-ton capacity and three hundred cubic feet of drayage space, the very low-tech South African nuclear device developed during the 1980s would have fit nicely. After that February 1993 fertilizer attack, the U.S. nuclear weapons laboratories ran some calculations on the theoretical results of a five-kiloton explosion on the streets of lower Manhattan on February 26, 1993, given the wind and weather conditions on that day. The most frightening results of such an attack could have been:

· Most buildings south of Central Park destroyed, their inhabitants dead

· Millions of other New Yorkers, once living south of 125th Street, dying of radiation effects

· Millions more throughout the metropolitan area suffering acute radiation sickness

· Much of lower Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Hoboken set on fire

Unless we are attentive to history, a terrorist organization will soon be able to assemble and place such an A-bomb within a truck, ship, or container and deliver the same to the heart of any number of U.S. cities. Even "small and inefficient" nuclear weapons could have a devastating effect on American society and its institutions. But is the simple raining of death and destruction on the West the only goal of these people? The jihadists and/or their patrons may have grander ambitions.

my infant loves these5
These are some of my infants favorite books. I just have to say the title and he already recognizes the book I'm about to read him. He gets so excited over Brown Bear Brown Bear!

Brown Bear & Friends Book Set5
I am a Kindergarten Autistic Support teacher and my students LOVE these books! Excellent condition, speedy delivery, great price! Thanks!

Excellent little set, especially for the price!5
The 'Brown Bear, Brown Bear What Do You See' book was recommended to me by both my 4 year old daughter's speech therapist and her teacher. In town just this book alone was priced at 7.95. I found the set here on Amazon.com and the price was just too good to pass up! All three of these books are great for helping teach proper sentence structure and pronoun usage with I and you. Brown Bear features colors, Polar Bear works on animal sounds and 'what do you hear?', and Panda Bear is 'what do you see' again with more specific animal names like a green sea turtle and a spider monkey. The art is timeless and the repetitive sentence structure enables your toddler or preschooler to read with you, making them fun as well as educational. While I initially bought this to help with some of my daughter's PDD challenges, since then these books have also been read to my 2 year old and she loves them too! I definitely recommend picking up this set!

Amazon.com Review
Yann Martel's imaginative and unforgettable Life of Pi is a magical reading experience, an endless blue expanse of storytelling about adventure, survival, and ultimately, faith. The precocious son of a zookeeper, 16-year-old Pi Patel is raised in Pondicherry, India, where he tries on various faiths for size, attracting "religions the way a dog attracts fleas." Planning a move to Canada, his father packs up the family and their menagerie and they hitch a ride on an enormous freighter. After a harrowing shipwreck, Pi finds himself adrift in the Pacific Ocean, trapped on a 26-foot lifeboat with a wounded zebra, a spotted hyena, a seasick orangutan, and a 450-pound Bengal tiger named Richard Parker ("His head was the size and color of the lifebuoy, with teeth"). It sounds like a colorful setup, but these wild beasts don't burst into song as if co-starring in an anthropomorphized Disney feature. After much gore and infighting, Pi and Richard Parker remain the boat's sole passengers, drifting for 227 days through shark-infested waters while fighting hunger, the elements, and an overactive imagination. In rich, hallucinatory passages, Pi recounts the harrowing journey as the days blur together, elegantly cataloging the endless passage of time and his struggles to survive: "It is pointless to say that this or that night was the worst of my life. I have so many bad nights to choose from that I've made none the champion." At one point in his journey, Pi recounts, "My greatest wish--other than salvation--was to have a book. A long book with a never-ending story. One that I could read again and again, with new eyes and fresh understanding each time." It's safe to say that the fabulous, fablelike Life of Pi is such a book.

First published in 2002, Martel's breathtaking breakout novel became an international bestseller and went on to win the Man Booker Prize, and was also named Amazon.com's Best Book of 2002. In 2005, after an international competition, Croatian artist Tomislav Torjanac was selected to illustrate a special edition of Life of Pi that features 40 stunning illustrations that present a new perspective on this modern classic. --Brad Thomas Parsons

Not Great, But Holds Your Interest3
I can't say it's the best book I ever read, but it manages to hold your interest. You simply have to see how it ends.

Life of Pi AKA one of the best books ever!5
By Alex Schnepf

Life of Pi is well worth the money it costs to purchase this book. This book has amazing descriptions of gruesome yet mind-numbing animal fights and also it uses great descriptors when talking about Pi's emotional feelings, physical and inner conflicts.

This riveting adventure for this young, Indian, vegetarian boy, Pi, is told in first person. For the most part in this story, Pi is drifting out on the Pacific Ocean with a couple of visitors aboard his vessel (a good size life boat). Those visitors are a zebra, a hyena, an orangutan, and a bloodthirsty Bengal tiger.

Another thing that brought this book to life were the impeccable illustrations done by Tomaslav Torjanac. They added a great graphic picture to already amazing descriptions by Yann Martel.

All in all, I thought this book was very well written with outstanding descriptions and a real perspective on moral values and life.

Highly Entertaining5
This was something I couldn't wait to read again - excuses for rainy day reading. The book is humerous and gripping, and I didn't want to put it down. Just a wonderful story, made me feel like I knew Piscene "Pi" Patel personally. I look forward to other books by this author.
